Asthma and Fish Oil
Millions around the world who suffer from exercise-induced asthma could benefit from the addition of fish oil to their diets. In a study conducted a few years ago at Indiana University researchers examined the lungs and analyzed the sputum samples of asthma patients both before and after the administration of fish oil. After a 3 week period of having fish oil added to their diets, test patients showed a 64% improvement of lung efficiency and a 31% reduction in the need for asthma medications. It is thought the anti-inflammatory effects of the Omega 3 fatty acids contained in fish oil might be the cause for the favorable results. This is great news for asthmatics who have put off exercise for fear of triggering an attack. Although the focus of the study was on patients who suffer from exercise-induced asthma, one can’t help but wonder if the same anti-inflammatory effect would be equally beneficial to any asthma sufferer.
